The Byrom Parent/Student Organization wishes to welcome all new parents! Our organization fulfills vital needs for Byrom by assisting with or providing funding for field trips, equipment, school improvement, teaching assistants, technology, staff appreciation, and special events. We also host several Family Nights throughout the year. Parents and students can come to school to dance or watch a movie, and in May, we hold a big carnival with tickets, prizes, food and fun!
Every parent is a member of the PSO. We would love to have you get involved in helping Byrom. You can simply attend PSO meetings, or if you have more time, you can volunteer for any number of PSO events throughout the year. Below is a list of our most urgent needs. For each of these, a former chair would be available to show you the ropes and get you started. And don’t forget, as the chair, you don’t do all the work! You create teams of other parent volunteers and work together to create really fun and important PSO events. Parent volunteers at Byrom are awesome, and really do add so much to our school!
Art Literacy:
Coordinates with teachers to have each student produce a work of art that can be reproduced onto various items for purchase (through Original Works). Attends district meetings, plans out school-wide projects based upon assignments per the district, order supplies, train volunteers, maintain supplies in art lit room. Requires 2-3 volunteers per classroom.
Benefit:
Each year Byrom hosts an amazing, fun-filled auction. Typically, funds raised from the auction go to fill a specific need, such as technology purchases or playground equipment. The chairs plan the event, co-ordinate with volunteers and donator; work with classroom teachers….etc. Multiple chairs are needed to make this wonderful event work – procurement, decorations, class baskets, class projects, etc. There are many areas that can be completed at home, on the phone, or driving around town. District Backpack Program:
Every week backpacks go home filled with food to families that desperately need our help. Food donations come in from Byrom parents as well as various organizations such as the food bank. This person will create the monthly rotation schedule of volunteers to stuff the backpacks, coordinate food donations, working with the liaison who brings in the food from the food bank, and maintain communication to Byrom parents through various means. Backpacks are stuffed every week by Thursday. Requires from 8 to 10 volunteers per month, usually the same volunteers monthly.
Book Fair:
Organizes volunteers to staff Book Fair in late October. Helps establish and implement annual book fair theme. Requires volunteers based upon hours of operation and also setup and tear down of displays.
Caring Closet:
Coordinates Byrom PSO involvement with our regional Caring Closet. Organizes gathering of clothing donated by school/community as well as coordinating the ‘Stuff the Bus’ event.
Carnival:
Responsibilities include arranging Carnival theme, vendors, organizing volunteers for ticket sales, set-up/clean-up, running booths, organizing games, prizes and refreshments.
Requires volunteers to man booths during the event.
Foundation Coin Drive:
Each year in February the Foundation for Tigard/Tualatin Schools hosts a coin drive. A machine is donated to us that counts the coins, and let me tell you the students LOVE this! This volunteer would be the liason between the foundation and Byrom in regards to reserving the coin machine, setting up the coin machine and emptying the coin machine each afternoon for one week in February (depositing the coins at a local bank). A few emails prior to the event, a few posters to create and one week of fun is what this volunteer gets to do!
Family Nights:
Coordinates two Byrom family nights – one in the fall which is normally a dance and another in the spring which is normally a movie night. Coordinates volunteers, food, vendors, and themes.
Field Day:
Works with Byrom’s PE Teacher to coordinate fun outdoor activity stations during field day. Helps coordinate volunteers for each activity.
Fifth Grade:
These students are the leaders of our school. We require volunteers to chair legacy projects, end of the year party, and yearbook creation. This is the last year your students will be in Elementary school.
Jog-a-Thon:
This person coordinates one of our biggest fundraisers The JAT is held in the fall, requiring hours to start in July in order to plan items such as tee shirt ordering, communication with parents and staff, and prizes.
Requires main bulk of volunteers on day of event but needs some prior to and after event as well.
Library:
One committee chair that oversees various library committees such as: Volunteerism, Trainer, Purchaser, Architect, Books of the Month and Media Specialist. The library takes a community of people to nurture it and make sure it works properly. Various volunteer opportunities in each committee – before, during and after school hours.
Lobby Display Case:
A first impression is always nice. We want our visitors’ first impression of Byrom to be welcoming and inviting. Our lobby is where these first impressions start. Byrom would like to display many ongoing projects in the lobby, such as – a Giving Tree (to display donations made throughout the year), a Volunteer Appreciation area, a PSO information area as well as an event informational section. Hours and time will vary dependent on the volunteer’s schedule.
PSO Webmaster:
Oversees PSO and Byrom website, keeps content updated and adds new features as needed.
Restaurant Fundraising Nights:
Several events throughout the year where fundraisers are held at local restaurants. Responsibilities include contacting restaurants, arranging these events and marketing.
Room Parent Coordinator:
Coordinates volunteers for teachers as room parents. Provides training and list of responsibilities for room parents.
Staff Appreciation (Hospitality):
Coordinate and plan staff appreciation events throughout the year. During the school year an average of 4 events occur – one in August, one in October, one in March and a week long event in May.
Vision/Picture Day:
Coordinate volunteers to assist with getting students from classrooms to pictures and on to vision screening. Takes place in mid-September.
Walk/Bike to School:
Coordinates volunteers in getting students safely to and from school on Walk/Bike to School day.
Redemption/SCRIP:
A year round fundraiser that encourages parents to participate in community programs that already exist that will contribute money to our school as a result of our purchases/participation. These programs include but are not limited to: Box-Tops for Education, SCRIP.
