OBOB Summer Reading

Summer Readers and Question Creators

Before you start reading your books please read through the question creation guidelines and perhaps review some questions from past years.  For each book you should create:

  • 5-10 “In which book” questions
  • 3-6  one-part content questions
  • 2-4  two-part content questions

Once your books have been chosen/assigned your name will appear in a table below with links that will take you to a question submission form that is pre-filled in with your name and the book title.  November 23th is the deadline for questions to be submitted.  If you have any questions or need to change a book assignment email byrom.obob@gmail.com.  The full list of book titles and authors is here.

OBOB Volunteers

For general information about OBOB at Byrom see here.

How can you help with OBOB at Byrom?

As a parent the most important thing you can do is to encourage your child to read which may include reading to or with them!

There are also a number of other volunteer roles that are very important to the success of OBOB at Byrom some of which are listed below.  If you are interested in helping with any of these or would like to learn more please send email to byrom.obob@gmail.com

Be a summer reader and question creator

We ideally want at least 2 readers for each book.  If you are interested, email the book titles you would prefer and you will be added to as a summer reader and question creator.  The summer reader information page is here with links to where you can submit your questions.

The questions created by summer readers are very important for OBOB and are used in the following ways:

  • Weekly practice battles
  • Cotent in games
  • Worksheets
  • Individual and team review outside school (some teams meet and practice on their own!)

Be a question reviewer

In the fall all the created questions will be reviewed so they are ready to be used by the students

Be a helper during the weekly OBOB meetings

You can help out weekly, every-other week, once a month or just be a sub, it all helps!  Every grade level meeting needs volunteers to perform the following:

  • Take role
  • Record books read
  • Help students eat lunch and clean up
  • Hand out prizes
  • Setup and run battles or games
  • Escort students back to lunch recess area

Once practice battles start we run as many battles as possible every week in each grade level.  In the past we have had up to 7 teams in a single grade which means 3 battles were going at once every week!

  • The “odd team” team not battling would watch the battles or do worksheets
  • Ideally at least one volunteer would supervise the team not battling

Each practice battle requires 2-3 volunteers

  • One volunteer reads the questions and judges the answers
  • One volunteer keeps score and keeps time for each question
  • If a third volunteer is available they will keep time
