OBOB Volunteers

For general information about OBOB at Byrom see here.

How can you help with OBOB at Byrom?

As a parent the most important thing you can do is to encourage your child to read which may include reading to or with them!

There are also a number of other volunteer roles that are very important to the success of OBOB at Byrom some of which are listed below.  If you are interested in helping with any of these or would like to learn more please send email to byrom.obob@gmail.com

Be a summer reader and question creator

We ideally want at least 2 readers for each book.  If you are interested, email the book titles you would prefer and you will be added to as a summer reader and question creator.  The summer reader information page is here with links to where you can submit your questions.

The questions created by summer readers are very important for OBOB and are used in the following ways:

  • Weekly practice battles
  • Cotent in games
  • Worksheets
  • Individual and team review outside school (some teams meet and practice on their own!)

Be a question reviewer

In the fall all the created questions will be reviewed so they are ready to be used by the students

Be a helper during the weekly OBOB meetings

You can help out weekly, every-other week, once a month or just be a sub, it all helps!  Every grade level meeting needs volunteers to perform the following:

  • Take role
  • Record books read
  • Help students eat lunch and clean up
  • Hand out prizes
  • Setup and run battles or games
  • Escort students back to lunch recess area

Once practice battles start we run as many battles as possible every week in each grade level.  In the past we have had up to 7 teams in a single grade which means 3 battles were going at once every week!

  • The “odd team” team not battling would watch the battles or do worksheets
  • Ideally at least one volunteer would supervise the team not battling

Each practice battle requires 2-3 volunteers

  • One volunteer reads the questions and judges the answers
  • One volunteer keeps score and keeps time for each question
  • If a third volunteer is available they will keep time

Carnival

Friday, May 13 @ 5:30

If you know you’re attending the Byrom Carnival on Friday, May 13, a good idea is to purchase entry bracelets and food tickets early. There will be early sales after school on Tuesday and Wednesday (May 10 and 11) in the cafeteria. Bracelets are $5 with food tickets $1 (pizza costs 2 tickets, drinks/popcorn/ice cream cups are 1 ticket). Cash and check accepted.

There still are volunteering opportunities available and Katy Collins could use your help to make this an incredible evening for our kids. Contact her at 3katycollins@gmail.com if you have some time on that Friday.

Place Your 5th Grade Yearbook Ad

Download order form for yearbook ads here.

Be one of the first parents to cheer your child on to middle school by placing a congratulations ad in the 5th grade yearbook!

Show support for our Byrom 5th grade students, teachers and staff and help us raise money so that each 5th grader will receive a free yearbook. Yearbook ads can be sent from anyone; parents, students, grandparents, siblings or even friends! For only $10 per ad, you can place a business card sized ad for your Byrom student, teacher, or staff member.

  • Congratulate your child on a fantastic 5th grade year
  • Wish them luck in middle school
  • Thank your teacher or a staff member for making a difference

Please note that longer messages will be condensed into smaller font, if necessary. If you have lots to say, you may consider placing two shorter ads!

Deadline for placing an ad is April 15, 2016.

Place $10 cash or check payable to Byrom PSO with the ad information in the PSO box in the front lobby. Feel free to place as many ads as you want.

Classroom Projects:

Create a unique piece of art that all the children in the class have a hand in doing. Each project has a budget of $50 from the PSO. You will have to purchase materials or have them donated. You will then turn in your receipts into the PSO and will be reimbursed.
There are several websites that help in creating a fun project and you can find great ideas on Pinterest.
If you are interested in taking on this fun opportunity, please contact Nikki Castillo at nikkicastillo@yahoo.com. Projects must be completed by Friday, February 20th.

Book fairs are our library’s primary source of operating funds. New books, library science materials and even shelving are all supported by the fair. It is also our goal to provide the opportunity for every student to have a book in their hands and know the joy of reading for pleasure and adventure.

Students will have preview days for the fair during their library times 10/27-10/29.

Through Google Play or the Apple App Store, you can also download the Scholastic Book Fair app for your phone. You can scan book covers or barcodes to view product information. It will recommend age, grade and appropriate reading levels for books with summaries, prices and book trailers.

Thank you in advance for helping make our MONSTER BOOK FAIR a success. Preview fliers and online order information will be sent home with your child.
